Laya makes a difference in empowering marginalized communities

The unit facilitated the domestication of broom grass. Based on its morphological characters and habitat of brooms, three varieties of broom grass were recorded. Rhizome was recommended to the farmers as planting material. Standardized agronomic practices for broom grass were disseminated in the various capacity building programmes. Exchange programmes were conducted on knowledge sharing among broom grass cultivators. Broom grass based mixed cropping models were developed with chilli, millets and rajama intercropping practices. Farmers were trained on the promotion of broom grass on podu lands and on the value addition to broom sticks. Weaving broom fibres that are obtained from the specific forest shrubs into brooms is a common practice in the region. However, due to overexploitation most of the shrubs have been wiped out from surrounding habitations.
